Emmeline turned 6 the other day, prompting a syrupy, parental gush of milestone melancholy.
Take a look over at Babble.
And yes, that was her present this year — that shirt above.
I surprised her by making an authentic-looking riding silk like the ones worn by Seabiscuit’s jockeys, because if there’s anything the past year has proven, it’s this: The jockey phase is not going away soon.
Sadly, everyone she encountered asked if she was dressed as some unknown super hero, while she calmly explained that she was waiting to take on War Admiral. This only heightened the confusion. But she had fun.
Last year …

We live about 6 miles from the Santa Anita Racetrack. If you ever want to visit the race track (which now has a playground in the middle of the center track) let me know.
They have a Seabiscuit tour, but last time we tried to go, it got rained out. I will say, some of the people who attend the races are a little, shall we say, sad-making?
Oh, and to make it a little less scary that a complete stranger is inviting you to her place, my daughter is about the same age as Emmeline (Sammie, also known as Blue Eyes will be 6 this summer.)
Santa Anita is on our list of places to visit for sure. Dustin Hoffman didn’t do it much good in Luck, but we still would like to go … and oh yes, the railbirds. We have the same here at Golden Gate Fields.
I just found your blog and love it! The Austin entry really cracked me up. Half my fam is in Berkeley and the other half in Austin. Sometimes I’d prefer the beauty. And sometimes the friendliness. I’m sure that somewhere there is a time tunnel that connects the two because I swear I’ve seen that same pink leotarded unicycle guy in both places.
