Craft Off! It’s on
Posted November 8th, 2009 | Filed Under: Blog
A few weeks ago, I challenged Dana to a Craft Off, because when it comes right down to it, we are incredibly exciting people.
Staying up late to work on a button hole? Watch out. Here we come.
Cutting the fabric just so to make the placket perfect? Whoa. Calm down, sister.
I use satire as a mask because the fact is I — we — are beyond thrilled to have finally done something with this wasted space we had upstairs. Not quite a room, not quite a loft, we never knew what to do with it, cramming it full of unused furniture and junk. It was also where we did the majority of our sewing. We used a rickety cardboard table for our sewing machine and sprinkled our fabric liberally about the space, tossing scraps onto old couches or chairs. But now — now we have a veritable mecca for muslin, a golconda for gabardine.
That’s right. We made a craft room.
Like I said. Exciting.
So to kick off a new era in familial craftiness, Dana and I held a friendly competition to see who could make the cutest outfit for our daughter.
Dana chose a jump rope dress from an Oliver & S pattern, while I went with the playsuit pattern. Dana gets extra points from the start because she chose a much more difficult pattern. But I like to think … oh never mind.
I already voted for hers.
And you?

I’m not sure my vote counts b/c I’m partial to anything pink. Any when you put brown w/it, well it’s not really a fair contest.
I think Emme wins b/c they’re both freaking adorable!!
I have to agree with mamaspeak…I think Emme wins because they are both so flipping cute and really your Emme is so cute…I think she could get away with wearing anything!!
I do love her boots and even more…she’s got some sweet ink!!
Sorry I cant pick! I love them both!
I like the playsuit… although, I think I would have chosen different colors. Both outfits are great, though. I wish I could sew.
Would you like to become my personal seamster? Though I have boys, so it’s a whole different ballpark, and I can’t afford to pay much. I know that’s a huge incentive.
TECHNICALLY I can sew. I’ve done it. I’ve made clothing, even.
But you will not find me pulling out a sewing machine any time soon.
I love them both. I do recognize that the dress is more difficult, so I think Dana may have to win on technical points.
Traitor!
Yeah, next time we’ll pick the same outfit to make it more even. I just love Dana’s dress. It’s quite possibly the best thing either of us have ever made.
The dress, the dress!!! I LOVE IT! Both are great. But that dress makes my heart smile. And of course the model wearing it is too cute for words. How many hours did the dress take? Gorgeous!
Et tu Dianes? I know, I know — it’s gorgeous. The first one took her a long time, but once the pattern was cut out and directions understood, she flew through the next one. I can’t wait to make my own.
OH so cute! I love Oliver + S patterns - I made the dress version from the jumpsuit pattern. And can I just say how incredibly jealous I am you have a CRAFT ROOM? I have a corner in our very crowded living room. What I wouldn’t give for a space of my own!
Dana’s dress is a-DOR-able, I cannot get over it! (The playsuit is very cute too, but that little pocket! and the yellow fabric! and the front-tie bow! So sweet.)
Both of the outfits are darling, let’s get that said straightaway.
HOWEVER, I am anxious to see the craft room! How did it turn out? What did you incorporate to make crafting easier/more convenient/more fun?? ‘Fess up, ’cause inquiring minds want to know.
she is the best dressed kid alive.
Thanks all, and craft room photos to come — as soon as I finish working on Emme’s new bunk bed. And as soon as I finish making a new dress — just got some amazing fabric while I was supposed to be at Home Depot picking up lumber for the bed.
Can’t wait to see photos of the room where you two created the most awesome outfits for Emme! You are living my dream, seriously. A room just for crafts? I’d be ecstatic too.
If you could make the dress out of the playsuit fabrics it would be the most fantastical thing ever. Especially with the coordinating boots!
I wish I was boring. oh wait…
FYI, because you’re awesome (and not just for sewing), there’s an award for you over on my blog.

Sorry, I can’t get into the playsuit thing. Cute, I guess, but not very conducive to self help toileting skills. I vote for the dress.
Cute, I guess — if I ever do start a line of clothing, that’s what I’m going to call it. Love it.
While I LOVE the Oliver + S dress, I have to chose yours. Innovation and simplicity.
Hmmm, now I have to rethink this. Dana wins this round, but compared with your newest dress, it might be close. You two need to do a same-dress craft off!
Dana wins! But I also vote for another craftoff but with the same pattern.
