Pop’s iconography

dsc_0102New dress!

Honestly, I thought she’d be a lot more excited about a tuxedo-clad ceramic monkey sitting on some dude’s matching golden tuxedoed lap.

Because if anything is going to get a kid stoked on art, it’s a tuxedo-wearing monkey. Sitting on a pedophile’s lap.

But when Emmeline saw Jeff Koons’s iconic statue of Michael Jackson and Bubbles, she shrugged.

Shrugged.

I had been wanting to show this to her for years, and now that it’s on display, I couldn’t wait to get over the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to check it out. We cruised around the fifth floor sculpture garden, did our usual Piet Mondrian cake treasure hunt and then hit the second floor permanent installation, which had been redone in honor of the museum’s 75th anniversary.

When we rounded the corner and saw the statue, I shot a look to the side and caught her mouth gaped in horror, as if to say, “What the freaking Billie Jean is that?”

Then she happily beat it, dancing around a few more corners before glimpsing one of her favorite pictures and something else that caught her eye. She clapped her hands together.

“Hey, look!” she gasped, “More Warhols!”

Some kids have no taste at all.

On a different note, this is a new dress I’m quite proud of, despite the fact I had intended to finish it months ago and the colors are now so last season.

Oh Warhol Schmarhol, my pop iconography is better than yours. What are you, three?

Sorry, but I’m with your daughter here…that MJ statue is effing CREEPY!!!

I do LOVE the dress!! The colors are great, especially love the orange detail!! Good job! :-)

No thanks to the statue. My guess is that seeing it up close and personal would be even creepier than the picture you posted.

Cute dress. I’m still hoping one day I’ll be able to design my daughter’s clothes, too. Then again, the first fleece dress I made without a pattern had way too much material in the chest and neckline.

OH.MY.WORD.! Your blog is hilarious!!!!! LOVED your descriptive telling of your daughter’s reaction to the statue.

That statue is…. creepy.

But I love the dress.

You guys are killing me. This is a gilded age of the 80s classic! If I could steal one thing from the moma, this would be it. There’s no way a cop would catch me as I ran happily down the street with that thing on my back …

Cree-pee. But cute dress!

ugh

Laughing out loud at the sight of you running the streets of San Francisco with that statue on your back. No offense, but you’re going to have to hit the gym a little harder. The statue looks big, and heavy. I like the gold hues of the statue myself… would look nice in our living room.

I was so tempted to give it a test lift, but the docent must have sensed I was up to something. I bet it’s hollow inside — that might work to my advantage some late night …

Posted by: mike on January 22nd, 2010 at 10:00 am

I got your back on this. And you made that?

Posted by: Ted on January 22nd, 2010 at 12:20 pm

I have always wanted to see that in person. It looks so kitschy and well kitschy. Jealous!

Posted by: Janet on January 22nd, 2010 at 2:00 pm

It’s definitely worth a trip to San Francisco JUST to see it. (They even made a dessert in the fifth-floor sculpture garden to compliment to gaudiness of it.) And yes, that was all me. You probably heard the cursing.

Delurking to say best dress yet!

I am laughing a bit b/c the last time I commented here was on a post that you linked to! What are the chances that I would breeze by for another read and catch a reference to that gorgeous Mondrian cake art again?

This time around, I am thankful to have followed your link to the interactive “Get to Know Your Modern Art” where I became a big fan of this sculpture which my art-deprived self had never seen before. I am feeling very sensitive about this egregious lack of cultural knowledge, btw.

Great dress!

Isn’t that a neat feature? I love the moma blog. While we were at the museum, I saw an old red phone they had set up in the visitor’s center. It was like one of those nuclear attack phones from the ’60s. They invited people to pick it up and explain which piece of art they would take home if they could. I was tempted to beg them to let me take michael and bubbles home.

That is one cool dress.

And from this day forward I’m using “What the freaking Billie Jean” as much as possible.

Posted by: creative type dad on January 23rd, 2010 at 8:39 pm

Your blog is hilarious! And that dress is sooooo cute.

Posted by: elamom on January 23rd, 2010 at 8:55 pm

holy crap she is TALL!!

Posted by: flutter on January 23rd, 2010 at 10:33 pm

I think the dress is just too short …

And you’re welcome for the Billie Jean, CTD. I’ve been saying it myself of late.

Posted by: mike on January 23rd, 2010 at 10:41 pm

If only Koons made that in one of his “inflatables” then you could take it home. Cool dress.

Posted by: Joe on January 24th, 2010 at 4:44 am

I never thought of the inflatables! Great idea!

Posted by: mike on January 24th, 2010 at 8:34 am

The orange works, totally. And that stature is amazing. I’d give anything to see it in person.

Posted by: Kelly on January 24th, 2010 at 4:10 pm

If only you could have let her ride that thing, although come to think of it that might not be such a great idea considering who the subject is. But he’s ceramic right? Probably the docents would have stopped you anyway. And I whole-heartedly agree: fan fucking tastic dress!

Posted by: TS on January 25th, 2010 at 11:37 am

That’s funny. For a brief moment I thought about putting her on top of it but then decided it would be wrong on so, so many levels.

Posted by: mike on January 25th, 2010 at 2:51 pm

Wrong. Just wrong.

Posted by: anan on January 25th, 2010 at 3:10 pm

I thought it was funny. Enough time, definitely.

Posted by: Lilsmom on January 26th, 2010 at 8:39 am

This is perfect, everything, and I love the orange. It makes everything just come together. Love it! (And I’d take Bubbles home with me too. But I’m pretty sure that’s a band outfit and not a tuxedo.)

Ah! My husband had to reset my computer a couple of months ago and I lost my reader in the process. Last night I suddenly realized I hadn’t added you back.

Love the dress! Perfect for tights this year and jeans/leggins next.

Posted by: Crisanne on February 2nd, 2010 at 9:04 am

And here you were almost free! I wouldn’t have reset my feed reader if I were you. Oh well, now you’re stuck with me — my sincere apologies. And Stacy, as much as I would LOVE to do that, I do not. However, I am part of an auction for Haiti and am giving away a children’s set of pants — see photo to the right. And thank you!

If you need a partner in crime, I’ll split that thing with you. Great photos, and orange really does look good on her.
